What is the ideal INR level?

It is nearly impossible to maintain the same INR level day-to-day. Your INR will fluctuate for various reasons such as diet and medication. Since your INR levels will always fluctuate, your doctor will assigned you a target INR range. Typically, there are two ranges: 2.0-3.0 and 2.5-3.5

INR range of 2.0 to 3.0

An INR range of 2.0 - 3.5 is usually given to people with the following conditions:1

  • Treatment for deep vein thrombosis (dvt) - blood clot in leg
  • Treatment for pulmonary embolism (pe) - blood clot in lung
  • Prophylaxis of venous thrombosis (high-risk surgery)
  • Tissue heart valves
  • Acute Heart Attack
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Atrial fibrillation

INR range of 2.5 to 3.5

An INR range of 2.5 - 3.5 is usually given to people with the following conditions:1, 2

  • Mechanical Heart Valves
  • Recurrent Heart Attack
  • Antiphospholipid antibodies
